Gratitude

The Shadow has been back in his own world for several days, but he has yet to see any duty on the streets. The combination of grave warnings from the doctors and nurse Branigan, combined with an awareness that he still wheezes after any form of exertion are enough to persuade him to take rest. The Shadow's form of rest, however, may not be quite what the clinic staff had in mind.
The apartment of James Rettigue, sleek with black furnishings and little decoration, is nearly as good as a second Sanctum. He would prefer the familiar, dusty elegance of the abandoned Cranston Mansion for his recovery, but this is a working vacation. There is a luxury here, in that the black suede sofa is long enough for even him to lie out at full length. It is here he spends much of his days, papers and books within reach on the coffee table, PINpoint in hand. It sees almost constant use for text communication with Burbank. The phone is also close at hand, thanks to an extended cord, because sometimes it is easier to give instructions and recieve information in a more personal fashion. The task of coordinating agents, even as expanded as his network has become, to cover for him is a more laborious task than his usual work. He sleeps erratically, as has become his habit, and forces himself off the couch to stretch and make coffee and occasionally food. Just once, when things seem quiet for an hour or two, he dons black garments and visits the Nexus for the sake of preserving his own sanity and patience.

Somewhere amidst this life-devouring stream of work, he finds a few moments here and there to write notes, bundle together borrowed books, and PINpoints them home to their respective owners.

[livejournal.com profile] metody_green recieves his books in a stack neatly bound with black yarn. Atop this is a black knitted tea cosy. Evidently he could not bear to give it to Myra and withstand her resultant laughter, or perhaps he plans to make her gun cosies instead. If Metody is impressed that he mastered such a complicated creation in such a short time, he should remember precisely who it is he's dealing with. The Shadow easily masters many skills, and there's no reason knitting shouldn't be among them.
Tucked inside is a neatly folded note, in ordinary blue ink rather than the vanishing sort.

Green-
Not a word to Myra. She's busy in any case, and she'd never let me live it down. Thank you for all the books, liked the anthropological studies especially. Keeping busy.

[livejournal.com profile] courtneycrumrin finds her book PINpointed back with another, a weighty volume on magical theory bound in leather, the sort of old and dusty tome her uncle keeps but rarely references anymore. There is a note folded inside.

Crumrin-
Vastly entertaining, and glad not to see myself anywhere among the pages. Thank you for loaning me something that made me cough. Would appreciate feedback about this book, found at great expense in my world. Have yet to try anything. Are there simple spells without dangerous backlash to try? Making coffee spells? Something else utilitarian? This is not urgent, other things keep me busy. Best to your uncle.

[livejournal.com profile] cailisairgid has her books sent back by whatever method he can find, and atop the pile is a slightly battered but quite good psychology text. There is a new bookplate pasted inside, left blank for her to fill out. With some sense of her station, he has attempted to make her note in a more formal tone than is his usual wont.

Lady Nuala Airgetsnáithe,
I hope this makes a useful if humble addition to your library. I very much appreciated the loan when the days were long and dull. I do not have the opportunity to keep a very extensive collection myself, but this is one I've found interesting enough to hang onto for a while.
I hope this finds you well. I'm on the slow road to recovery myself, but back in my own world at the very least. Perhaps we shall meet again in the Nexus, under better circumstances.

[livejournal.com profile] victormakesart has her books PINpointed back, along with a number of drawings from the art tablet she brought along later. There are sketches of Roman war machines copied from the book she loaned him on that subject, a few detailed studies of both his left and right hand because he is ambidexterous, a loose but relatively accurate portrait of her from memory, and a detailed but bizarre page filled with a cross between a Rube Goldberg machine and physics diagrams. The Shadow's style of drawing is quite good, but has a feel of leaning towards technical precision more than artistic inspiration. There is a note among the drawings, on the same paper.

Allen-
Appreciated the variety and definitely the drawing lessons. Kept me busy beyond reading. I'll never be an artist but it was helpful all the same. Doing better, but won't be in the Nexus much. Avoiding working keeps me busier than work would. Happy Birthday, again.

[livejournal.com profile] sarah_branigan may not have brought him books, but he feels a sense of gratitude for a number of other reasons. Since he has her PINpoint number, he has the ability to send her something, and she will recieve a small package containing various teas and a box of fortune cookies, of the authentic sort found in Chinatown. He doesn't do much baking, and isn't up to it now in any case, so they will have to do. There is a note in her package, as well.

Branigan-
I didn't make any of it, but hope you like it all the same. The teas are from Chinatown in my world, I can always get more if you find something you like. Thank you for your timely aid, and your discretion. Taking it easy is a lot of work, but I am trying.
If there is ever trouble in your world, and I have not been recently shot, you may call upon me.

When the thank you letters are done, he returns to his work, and his private worries over Myra.
